The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing Gewobag, Berlin’s state-owned housing company, with a further loan of €300 million. The financing agreement for what is now the fourth project between the European Investment Bank and Gewobag has already been signed.
The funding will support the construction of more than 1,465 new apartments by 2029. It will also be used to create daycare places, commercial space, student housing and a mobility hub. The new sub-projects will be developed on Insel Gartenfeld in Berlin-Spandau, on Hohensaatener Straße in Berlin-Marzahn-Hellersdorf and on Westendallee in Berlin-Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.
The total volume of the four financing projects amounts to around €1.1 billion and makes a sustainable contribution to securing affordable housing in the German capital.
“With the EIB’s low-interest loan, we will continue to invest in housing construction in Berlin, enabling affordable housing for broad sections of the population even in economically challenging times. This is only possible with a strong partner at our side, and I am pleased that the EIB is once again supporting us,” said Markus Terboven, member of Gewobag’s Management Board.
“Affordable housing is not a luxury, but a public service. With this new financing for Gewobag, we are helping more than 1,400 Berlin households find a modern home – with fair rents, good transport connections and daycare facilities just around the corner. The EIB stands alongside cities that continue to invest in housing despite high construction costs, rather than waiting. Our goal is clear: housing that people can afford, and buildings that support climate action rather than hold it back. This loan sends a clear signal that the EIB Group is your partner – with advisory services, long-term financing and European expertise,” said Nicola Beer, Vice-President of the EIB.
The European Investment Bank is the financing institution of the European Union. It provides long-term loans for investments designed to support the economic development and integration of the Union. The EIB’s priorities include climate and environment, development, innovation and knowledge, small and medium-sized enterprises, and infrastructure.
